In Shopping for a Church, the following should be treated with extreme caution:
A pastor exercising sole control over the assembly, especially a family-run church. (clergy rule over the laity). (an extremely easy way to have leadership corruption).
Explanations like "that's the way WE do things", "it's our tradition", "it's part of our faith".
A church run by a board of deacons or elders
No open financial disclosure, no questioning of the tithe account
Reminders to tithe.
The taking of and request for offerings to support a building and what goes on inside of it
A lack of repentence in the lives of the members.
Unchanged lives in the people. Sin is overlooked.
Any 501c3 incorporated church (this may take some research on your part)
Dead rituals that people themselves cannot explain or understand why they do them.
Women taking authority over a man. There is no such thing as "Pastor Susie", "Pastor Jane", or the like in any scripture. A prophetess is not an elder, nor is the pastors wife co-equal in the ministry. (Except in the apostate church).
Church growth programs like: Purpose Driven.., Enroll to Grow, G-12, or any other of the other 14,718 church marketing strategies.
Any church that focuses on any book other than the Bible (yes, that includes the best-selling authors of Christendom)
A man-centered service that focuses on "I" "me" "us" or "Our"
False signs such as light orbs, drunk in the spirit, "falling out", spasmodic twitching, uncontolled laughter, gold dust, are evident.
Congregational response, phrase manipulation. "REPEAT after me".... or "Can you say ***** ", other in-house phrases used to manipulate crowd response.
Any church that reasons away or avoids obedience to NT scripture
Music that appeals to pleasing flesh, is repetitive, hypnotic, mind dulling.
There is assurance without repentance
Powerless preaching. People are unmoved, unstirred, un-repentent.
Stories, jokes, psychology, and "laws" or "steps" fill sermon time.
Just because it says "church", does not mean it is the church.
2Tim 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.
